Tony Bowran

Photographer Tony Bowran  was born in North Yorkshire and was commissioned by London and Worldwide Advertising Agencies from 1978 to 2005 

After a Foundation course at Art School he moved to London in 1973 to study Photography at the then London College of Printing ( now UAL ).  After graduating in ‘76 he worked as one of the assistants in the very busy studio of an advertising photographer of the day. He began his career in 1978 sharing a studio and soon set up his own Studio in the West End of London in 1979 which he ran until 1996, when he relocated the studio to Chelsea .  

His Commissioned Photography for International Advertising Agencies have won awards with the Association of Photographers ( AOP ) and his photographs have appeared in many award-winning advertising campaigns for,  D&AD , Campaign Press,  Creative Circle , Communication Arts , Clio , The One Show. 

Along side his advertising work, he has always worked on Personal projects and this Non - Commissioned Photography has won AOP  Gold , Silver and Bronze Awards,  London Photographic Awards and International Professional Competitions. His personal work has been published in photography books and magazines in Britain, Europe and the U.S.A. He has exhibited in galleries in London , Europe and Cornwall 

Throughout his profession Tony worked mainly using 10x8 “ and 5x4 “ Plate Cameras.  And at times  2 ¼”  medium format. 

And during his career , as a release from the world of Advertising Photography , Tony fenced Epee competitively for over 20 years on the National circuit and in Europe and qualified to fence for GB in ten World Cup A Grade Internationals . 

 In 2005 he embarked upon and is continuing his education in another ( but very different ) creative activity 


All the images were shot on film and “In Camera“ or hand printed in the darkroom at the time they are dated . Very few were further digitally, post produced, manipulated or photo-comped with the techniques so available, widespread and prevalent in photography in the last 25 years.
